Passenger numbers on double-decker trains up 7.8% in December 2020

In December 2020, double-decker trains operated by the Federal Passenger Company, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, carried 474,000 people, 7.8% more than in the same month in 2019.

In 2020, over 5.3 million passengers made journeys by double-decker trains, down 12% on 2019. In total, 9.1% of all Federal Passenger Company passengers used double-decker trains in 2020, up from 5.9% in 2019.

The most popular routes for double-deckers in 2020 were Moscow – Bryansk, which accounted for 18.5% of the total number of passengers on double-deckers, Moscow – Voronezh (15.4%), Moscow – St. Petersburg (10.6%), Moscow – Adler (7.7%), St. Petersburg – Adler (7.6%), Moscow – Izhevsk (6.7%) and Moscow – Samara (6.7%).

In total, 20 pairs of double-decker trains operated by the Federal Passenger Company run on 14 routes on Russian railways.

In 2020, the Russian Railways’ Holding increased the route network of double-decker trains, despite the difficult epidemic situation. New trains began to run between Murmansk and St. Petersburg and between Moscow and Smolensk.

The Federal Passenger Company currently has a fleet of 587 double-decker carriages.
