RZD Holding now regularly transporting coal to China by container trains
Russian Railways is now regularly transporting coal from Transbaikalia for export to China. The coal goes in 20-foot open top containers, which enable the loading of bulk cargo through the open roof and solve the problem of transshipment at border stations when changing rolling stock for different track gauges.
The first test shipments of coal in the open top containers took place in September 2020. As early as the next month, shipments became regular. At the moment, two trains a week run. Platform wagons for the transportation were provided by the Federal Freight Company, a subsidiary of Russian Railways.
Trains depart from Krasnokamensk and Priargunsk stations on Zabaikalskaya Railways for export to China via the Zabaikalsk-Manchuria border crossing. A total of 20 such trains with 2,300 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) carrying 78,500 tons of coal have already been dispatched.
Russian Railways, together with shippers and transportation and regulatory authorities, continues to improve its delivery systems. The time taken for a coal container train to complete the border and customs procedures at Zabaikalsk station, for instance, has been reduced from about 4 hours initially to less than 1.5 hours.
