December 17, 2009 - the beginning of high-speed trains in Russia
On this day, went to the first flight of high-speed train "Sapsan" on the route Moscow - St. Petersburg. This event marked the beginning of a new era in the development of railways in Russia.
"Sapsan" - high-speed train Velaro RUS series produced by "Siemens Transportation Systems", able to reach speeds of 250 km / h. The train got its name in honor of the fastest birds on the planet.
Contract to supply eight Velaro RUS trains was signed between JSC "Russian Railways" and the Department of Transport Systems "Siemens AG" in May 2006. The contract price - 276 million euros. In April 2007, a contract was signed maintenance trains for 30 years in the amount of 354.1 million euros.
For the organization of the train "Sapsan" was modernized infrastructure on the Moscow - St. Petersburg: the reconstruction of the roadbed, track superstructure, catenary and traction substations, stacked high speed turnouts and others.
In 2010, the route of the train "Sapsan" was extended to Nizhny Novgorod.
For December 2010 is planned to open high-speed service between St. Petersburg and Helsinki. On the route will run high-speed train "Allegro".
In the future, the development of high-speed traffic on the following areas:
- Moscow - Kursk Belgorod with extension to the project Moscow - Adler (high-speed traffic up to 160-200 km/h);
- Moscow - Yaroslavl, Moscow - Saratov - Samara, Yekaterinburg - Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk - Omsk and Moscow - Smolensk - Red and Moscow - Bryansk - Suzemka with extension to Minsk and Kiev in the development of "Space 1520" (high-speed traffic up to 160 -200 km/h);
- Extension of the route Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod to Yekaterinburg, Moscow - Smolensk - Red with extension to Berlin (high-speed lines, speed up to 350-400 km/h).
